SYRACUSE – The closing time for bars in Syracuse will remain no later than 2 a.m.

The closing time was extended an hour in 2016, but the owner of the Triple D Saloon, Darren Allen, asked the city council to return to 1 a.m.

Anthony Hensley of B&J’s Family Restaurant and Bar and Otoe County Sheriff Colin Caudill told the city council Wednesday there have been no issues with the  2 a.m. closing.

Hensely said bars can close whenever they want. He said it is unfair to make them all close at 1 a.m. because some do not want to stay open longer.

In other action, Sheriff Caudill reported that a stop sign will be placed at 9th and Locust. He said there were 37 traffic stops in Syracuse last month.

Mayor KC Ortiz also announced that the city would be posting for a city administrator position on Oct. 15 to close on Nov. 15. The mayor said he would like to have the position filled by the start of 2020.

The mayor said a city administrator would be instrumental in bringing fiber optic services to Syracuse, as well as other projects already underway.

The city council moved forward on accepting a location for a dog park. It will be placed just south of the concert site down by the city complex.  Ian Mitchell of Dunbar has been hired on to the parks department staff.

Mayor Ortiz and city council members constructed an ordinance to honor the Syracuse fire department for their 24/7 selfless giving to the Syracuse Community.

Present to accept the award are front row, Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department members / officers Craig Hemji, Eric Fass, Bruce Neemann, Adam Holz and Tim Seelhoff. Back row: council members  Deb Dettmer, Orv. Gigstad , Laramie Werner, Mayor KC Ortiz and Jerry Werner.
