PAPILLION -- A man arrested after a two-state chase ended when his vehicle crashed into the Nishnabotna River near Hamburg has been sentenced in Nebraska to 30 to 45 years for attempted assault on an officer and other crimes.

29-year-old William Stanfill III fired on a man in his Bellevue neighborhood and wounded a man picking up mail before leading police on a chase into Iowa.

When a Fremont County sheriff’s deputy joined the pursuit, Stanfill fired four or five shots, three of them hitting the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

Officers continued the chase south to Hamburg where Stanfill drove up on a river levee. Officers suspect he did not know there would be a river on the other side.

He and 37-year-old Jacqueline Streich were rescued from the water.

He was sentenced to 30 years for his Iowa crimes.
