GLENWOOD, Iowa (WOWT) - Iowa investigation authorities said Friday that the man taken into custody after two people were killed in a shooting two days earlier has died.

Dennis Burnell, 71, was taken into custody Wednesday night upon exiting his burning home. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said he sustained extensive burns and was transported to the burn unit at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City for treatment. Authorities were informed Friday that he had died.

An autopsy will be conducted, Iowa DCI said in the release.

Iowa DCI identified him as “the person responsible” for the deaths of Brandon Oman, age 38, and his 35-year-old wife, Stevie Oman, on Wednesday.

Authorities called it an “isolated incident,” and said they believed the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Burnell and two neighbors.

First Alert 6 investigated and found Burnell had previous run-ins with neighbors.

Last August, Burnell found guilty of harrasing a neighbor not involved in Wednesday’s incident. Mills County Court records state that he had been yelling slurs, and also noted that police had warned him a month earlier to stop yelling and or confronting that neighbor.

Sarah Allbritton told First Alert 6 on Thursday that she was aware of Burnell in the neighborhood but that her interactions were limited.

“I know that he has caused issues in the neighborhood,” she said.
