Naomi Y. Dettman

Naomi Y. "Jinx" Dettman, a beloved pillar of her community, passed away on January 31, 2026, at Falls City Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born on August 3, 1936, in Verdon, Nebraska, Jinx's life was one characterized by an unwavering passion for education, service, and the joys of connection with others.
She embarked on her noble career in teaching from 1974 to 1981, gracing the classrooms of Dawson, Johnson-Brock, and Elk Creek, where she ignited the minds of many young learners. Her commitment to nurturing positive growth in others didn’t stop with the school bell; Jinx spent seven years with Social Services Protection Services and another seven years with the SENDDS, enriching lives and advocating for the needs of those around her.
Jinx was a proud graduate of Stella High School and further enhanced her education with a Bachelor of Arts from Peru State College. Her foundational schooling took place in the humble yet meaningful halls of Tynon, Locust Grove, and Pioneer rural schools—each a cornerstone in shaping her drive and character. Her intellectual prowess and dedication inspired generations, marking her as a true educator at heart.
In addition to her profession, Jinx served her country honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958. This chapter of her life reflected her strength and commitment to her duties, which she carried on throughout her life, serving with distinction in various civic groups, including the American Legion Post #23, the Library Foundation Board, and the Jr. Women's Club. As a dedicated member of the Nebraska State Legion, she encompassed the spirit of service and community that defined her.
Beyond her professional accolades, Jinx found joy in life's simple pleasures. An avid gardener, she cultivated not only the flowers in her garden but also the friendships that blossomed around her. Her love for bridge brought together friends and family alike in spirited gatherings, while her adventurous soul led her to journey across all seven continents after her retirement. Each destination became a testament to her adventurous spirit and her deep appreciation for the world's beauty.
Throughout her life, Jinx relished her cherished role as a mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Krista (Joe) Scudlark of Milton, DE, and sons, Jeff (Laura) Dettman of Monroe, NC and Greg Dettman of Shubert, NE. The pride of her heart extended to her grandchildren, Zack and Renah Scudlark; Nicholas and Kelsey Dettman, who were illuminated by her love and guidance. Jinx is also survived by her sister Sue Epley of Woodward, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hanson and Vionetta Belle (Hill) Moody and her beloved husband, Dale Dettman. Also preceded by her brother Larry Gentry. Their memory remains ever-present in the lives that she touched and the legacy she leaves behind.
Jinx Dettman will always be remembered for her unwavering spirit, her boundless contributions to society, and above all, her heartfelt connections with family and friends. As her loved ones gather to celebrate her life, they carry forward the warmth of her laughter, the wisdom of her guidance, and the love she unconditionally bestowed upon all fortunate enough to know her.
The family wishes to thank Christina England and Margaret Miller for their assistance and kindness these last few years.
Jinx’s wishes were to be cremated; no services are planned.
