Peg Schemmel, age 101 rural Nebr. City, NE was called home on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Mary Margaret Jean (Grimes) Schemmel, (known as Peg to many) was born on September 2, 1923 at her grandmother Bernard’s house in rural Auburn, NE; the daughter of Ernest J. and Mary B. (Bernard) Grimes.  Peg attended grade school at Center School through the 3rd grade.  She then attended Julian Grade School through the 7th grade before return to Center School for her 8th grade year.  Peg then went to high school in Nebr. City where she graduated from St. Bernard’s Academy (currently Lourdes Central Catholic) in Nebr. City with the Class of 1940.

Peg was united in marriage to Robert E. “Bob” Schemmel in 1942 in Nebraska City, NE and to this union two sons were born:  Gary and Robert.  In addition to raising her family, Peg helped on the farm alongside Bob.  She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Julian, NE.  She also served as the Postmistress at the Salem, NE Post Office and was the secretary for the Superintendent of Schools at various schools.

She is survived by her son Gary E. Schemmel (friend Donna Bohling); two grandchildren:  Jody Eggert and Kelly Kreifel; three great-grandchildren:  Katelyn Eggert, Claire Kreifel and Morgan Kreifel; two sisters:  Janis Grimes of Julian, NE and Rita Weber (Roger) of Waverly, NE; sister-in-law Virginia Grimes of Omaha, NE; other family and friends.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband Robert E. Schemmel on September 24, 2015, her son Robert M. “Bobby” Schemmel on March 17, 2014; great-grandson Cody Eggert; her parents and a brother Jule Grimes.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Fr. Steve Cooney officiating.  Burial will follow in Camp Creek Cemetery south of Nebr. City.

A Rosary will be recited at 1:10 p.m. prior to the funeral on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camp Creek Cemetery Association.
