Tad "Skip" Hammond
Tad “Skip” Daley Hammond, age 91 of Nebraska City passed away November 21, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. Skip was born April 9, 1933 in Omaha, the son of Charles Whitaker and Feda Lucile (Clark) Hammond. Skip, as he was widely known, was a man of far-ranging interests both personal and professional. A graduate of Nebraska City High School ‘50 and The Lawrenceville School ‘52 P ‘16, he attended Princeton University ‘56 before serving in the Air Force. Stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, he served as First Lieutenant and private pilot for General Curtis LeMay. After being discharged from the Air Force, he attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln, graduating Cum Laude with degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering. He married Janice Cerra in 1958 with whom he had 2 children, Jay Courtney and Val Whitaker Hammond. They lived briefly in California while he worked for Boeing until returning home to Nebraska and taking over Hammond Farms. He was also a partner in feedlots in western Nebraska where he raised cattle. In the 1970s, Skip entered the world of banking with the purchase of the Peru State Bank in Peru, NE. He would grow both crops and banks over the next decade before selling the Nebraska bank and purchasing first the State Savings Bank in Bedford, IA, and then the Valley Bank & Trust in Cherokee. In 1998, the bank charter was moved to Creston, IA. In 2011, Valley Bank & Trust in Cherokee, IA was merged into State Savings Bank. Today, State Savings Bank operates in Bedford, Clearfield, Creston, Cherokee, and Marcus. In 1993, Skip married Jill Renee Dennis and the two enjoyed 31 years together. They shared three daughters: Logan Lucile “Scout,” Sage Dennis, and SeeDee Clark Hammond. The family enjoyed traveling, skiing, boating, golfing, scuba diving, and flying with Skip. Outside of business, Skip enjoyed golf, an interest he shared with his daughters Jay and Scout, as well as his mother. He was a voracious reader and a gifted writer, particularly of poetry even composing the poem found on his son Val’s grave marker. His appreciation for poetry and music lives on in his daughter, Sage. Probably the one thing everyone knew about Skip was that he was a gifted and exceptional pilot. He was often at his happiest in the air, a passion he shared with his youngest daughter, SeeDee. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Val Clark Hammond, and son, Val Whitaker Hammond. Survivors include his wife, Jill Hammond; daughters Jay Courtney, Logan Lucile “Scout”, Sage Dennis, and SeeDee Clark Hammond; many other relatives and friends.
