AUBURN – The Auburn City Council amended its zoning ordinances to allow dentistry in its commercial residential zone.

Attorney Angelo Ligouri said Hilltop Dental asked the city to add dental and medical as permitted uses in the CR zone so it can use a new building along J Street.

The Auburn Planning Commission held a public hearing on the change to the CR zone, which primarily follows portions of highways 136 and 75 through town.

Other permitted uses include single and multi-family dwelling units, motels, veterinary, churches, freight terminals and automobile sales.

The council also approved new members of the Auburn Municipal Facilities Corporation, a non-profit established in 1992. New directors are David Grant, Derek Hemmingsen and Joseph Casey.

The city council approved a wage ordinance on March 10 that sets pay above minimum wage for now, but is short beginning in January of 2026.

Nebraska’s minimum wage is $13.50, which is what the city pays uncertified pool staff. Beginning lifeguards are paid $14.50 an hour, which is lower than the state minimum wage of $15 an hour that takes effect in 2026.

Seasonal park laborers also earn $14.50 an hour this summer.
