NU Notes: Husker Men Ranked 10th in National Poll
The Nebraska men's track and field team achieved its highest national ranking in eight years as it came in at No. 10 in the USTFCCCA National Track & Field Rankings released on Monday.
The Nebraska men were last ranked in the top 10 during the 2015 season. The Huskers are the highest ranked Big Ten team in the national poll.
Mayson Conner (No. 2 high jump), Maxwell Otterdahl (No. 3 weight throw and No. 4 shot put) and Darius Luff (No. 5 60m hurdles) all rank in the top five nationally in their events. Additionally, Brithton Senior (No. 14 60m hurdles), Kevin Shubert (No. 15 shot put), Tyus Wilson (No. 19 high jump), Garrett Kaalund (No. 21 200m) and Till Steinforth (No. 25 long jump) all rank in the top 25 nationally.
The Husker women are ranked 31st nationally and are the third-highest ranked Big Ten team in the poll, which calculates performances from the 2023 indoor season only. The Huskers have yet to compete some of their top athletes in their best events.
Nebraska is coming off a strong showing at the Mark Colligan Memorial on Saturday, at which the Huskers won 17 event titles and achieved eight all-time Top-10 marks in school history.
The Huskers will compete on the road for the first time this year at the Texas Tech Open & Multis this weekend in Lubbock, Texas.
Baseball Fan Fest Set for Saturday, Feb. 11
The Nebraska baseball team's annual Fan Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hawks Championship Center, located next to Memorial Stadium.
The event will give fans a chance to meet the 2023 Huskers and get autographs. The first 1,000 fans will get a free hot dog and water. Activities include a whiffle ball home run derby, inflatables, balloon artists and face painters.
The Huskers open the 2023 campaign on Friday, Feb. 17 at San Diego. Nebraska's home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7 against Northern Colorado at Hawks Field. NU's complete regular-season schedule, which includes 27 home games at Hawks Field, is available on Huskers.com.
Fans can purchase season tickets for reserved sections or general admission at Huskers.com/tickets. In addition, the popular Diamond Deal, which allows fans to customize their own nine-game package, goes on sale Feb. 3.
Andrews Named A Top 100 Player Ahead of the 2023 Season
Billie Andrews was named No. 45 on the Preseason Top 100 list announced by Softball America Monday afternoon.
Andrews adds this honor after being named No. 46 in the Extra Innings Extra Elite 100 list and named No. 8 on the preseason shortstops list last week. The junior was also named to the preseason Top 100 list at No. 58 by D1Softball.
The Gretna, Neb., native, is coming off of a record-breaking sophomore season in 2022. The second-team All-Big Ten selection recorded 20 home runs during the year, setting a sophomore school record and finishing the season ranked 13th in the NCAA. Andrews was named an NFCA third-team All-Midwest Region selection and was voted the Nebraska Female Athlete of the Year. The Gretna, Neb., native finished the 2022 campaign with a .330 batting average which included 59 hits and 51 RBIs. Andrews started every game at shortstop for the Huskers and finished the year with a .925 fielding percentage helping Nebraska to its first Big Ten Tournament title.
The junior was also a leader in the classroom, claiming CoSIDA Academic All-District first team honors. Andrews was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
