ATLANTIC, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Transportation awarded a $905,636 contract Thursday to Reilly Construction Co., Inc. of Ossian to begin emergency repairs to Iowa 2 west of Horse Creek in Fremont County.

This area was overtopped by flooding in March and severely damaged by a second round of flooding in May.

The emergency repairs will restore limited mobility between Interstate 29 and the Nebraska border.

Once opened, traffic will travel in a head-to-head pattern in the westbound lanes. This temporary solution is expected to be completed by mid-August.

Several options are being considered for permanent repairs to Iowa 2 that will reduce the chance that Iowa 2 will be overtopped by floodwaters in the future.

Overflow bridges will also reduce impacts from overtopping, if it does occur.

On July 3, the transportation department reported repairs to Interstate 29 ramps.
