Cold starting Buick catches fire
AVOCA – A cold starting Buick is blamed for a fire on Thursday that occurred right across the street from the Avoca Fire Station.
Fire Chief Austin Jones said the homeowner had trouble starting the car in the morning and called a mechanic, who arrived to detect smoke and called the fire department, which is stationed just a few feet away.
Jones: “Just a normal fire basically. I mean you still have to get the truck out of the station. It’s just a way quicker response when you’re right across the street. It makes it a whole lot easier.”
He said the detached garage and vehicle were fully engulfed in flames when he arrived.
Jones: “It was a small enough structure, small enough fire, we knew that the tanker could handle it and we had mutual aid coming from Weeping Water with a tanker.”
Nine firefighters from Avoca and three from Weeping Water responded.
